Research Statement


My scholarship focuses on how patients and clinicians make judgments and decisions in healthcare, including in response to the integration of new technologies, like artificial intelligence (AI), and when motivated by biases.  In my current research, I study how human-AI recommendation discrepancies affect patients’ trust in their clinician, and how veterans make decisions on where to receive care based on online quality information. In my dissertation research, I examined how patients evaluated their physicians in online physician reviews. I investigated what reviews conveyed about the physician characteristics patients valued, developed a machine-learning model to classify patient judgments in a large sample of reviews, and interrogated whether differences existed in patients' judgments based on physicians' specialty and gender.
